Finding Stability in Chaos: A Message to Women Leaders in Deathcare

As women in deathcare, we often carry the weight of many responsibilities—guiding families through profound grief, managing the demands of a business, and striving to be leaders in a historically male-dominated field. It’s no surprise that there are moments when life feels overwhelming. I’ve been there, and I know how challenging it can be to find balance in the chaos.

Recently, I came across an article by A. Chris Heath, M.D., titled “What You Can Do When Life Is Overwhelming.” It reminded me of the importance of creating space to reflect, ground ourselves, and lean on the things that bring us clarity and calm. Drawing from my own experiences, I’d like to share a few ways we can all find stability during tough times.

1. Recognize Your Feelings

In our profession, it’s easy to push aside emotions to focus on the needs of others. I’ve learned that ignoring our feelings doesn’t make them go away. It postpones their impact. It’s important to acknowledging your emotions, no matter how chaotic or confusing they may seem.

For me, recognizing my feelings has been a key part of finding resilience. Whether it’s the stress of leading a business or the emotional weight of serving grieving families, allowing myself to pause and name what I’m feeling has helped me process and move forward with clarity.

2. Find a Source of Consistency

Consistency can anchor us in turbulent times. For me, that consistency has come from connecting with my core values: compassion, tradition, and a commitment to helping others. These values have guided me throughout my career, whether I was leading Baue Funeral Homes or mentoring the next generation through Your Funeral Coach.

As women in deathcare, we each have something that keeps us steady. Whether it’s a commitment to family, a passion for mentorship, or a deep respect for the traditions of our profession. Reconnecting with those values can provide a sense of stability, even when everything around us feels uncertain.

3. Find Something You Can Rely On

Finally, it’s important to identify external sources of support. For me, that’s often meant leaning on trusted colleagues, finding solace in nature, or simply creating moments of peace in my daily routine. Dr. Heath shares the story of a patient who found stability by reconnecting with the natural world, and I think many of us can relate to that need to feel grounded.

Whether it’s stepping outside to breathe in the fresh air, reaching out to a mentor, or finding comfort in the structure of a familiar routine, these small acts can make a big difference. For women leaders in deathcare, having a support system (whether it’s a professional network or a personal ritual) is essential to sustaining our strength.

To the incredible women of the deathcare profession: I see you, and I admire you. The work you do is so important, and your dedication inspires me every day. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that you’re not alone and that there are ways to find balance and calm, even in the most challenging times.

Let’s continue to support one another, lean into our strengths, and uplift the next generation of women leaders in funeral service. Together, we can create a profession where resilience and compassion thrive.

Warmly,

Lisa
