The Balancing Act: Women’s Wellbeing in Funeral Service
Women are changing the face of funeral service. They’re leading, innovating, and making a difference in this traditionally male-dominated field. But along with progress, many women in funeral service face challenges that are unique and often overwhelming.
A recent Gallup study revealed some troubling trends:
- Over half of working women in the U.S. feel stressed most of the day.
- 42% say their jobs have negatively affected their mental health in the past six months.
For women in funeral service, a job that is emotionally demanding, this stress can feel even heavier.
Balancing work and home is one of the toughest challenges for women in this field. Many of us have had to juggle answering urgent client calls during family dinners or fitting in personal errands between work tasks.
Gallup’s research shows that women who face this daily struggle are much more likely to feel burned out. Without support, this stress can lead to women leaving their jobs or feeling disengaged.
Funeral service doesn’t fit into a traditional 9-to-5 box. It’s unpredictable. Yet, many women don’t have the flexibility they need. This mismatch between preferred work styles and actual schedules creates more stress.
Flexible work arrangements can make a big difference. Women who feel supported in balancing work and home are:
- 50% more likely to thrive in life,
- Twice as engaged at work, and
- Much less likely to consider leaving their jobs.
Funeral service is about serving families during their hardest moments, but we also need to care for the people doing that work. Organizations must create environments where women feel valued, heard, and supported.
Simple steps can make a huge impact:
- Offer flexible schedules and clear policies.
- Train managers to support their team’s wellbeing.
- Encourage open conversations about work-life balance.
When women feel supported, they’re not just happier…they’re more effective and more likely to stay in their roles.
