Embracing Good Management for Better Mental Health and Promoting Diversity During Pride Month

I hope your June and the start of summer are filled with fun and restful moments outside the workplace. As we embrace the warmer days, it’s important to reflect on our work environments too. Did you know that according to Gallup, only 23% of employees globally are engaged in their work? That leaves a staggering 77% disengaged. The key to turning this around lies in great management—managers who truly support and include their teams.

In this month's newsletter, we delve into the theme of Embracing Good Management for Better Mental Health and share effective strategies to combat workplace stress. Additionally, we join the global celebration of Pride Month with a special focus on Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Let’s make this summer a season of growth and positive change!

Book Recommendation: "Dear White Leader" by Dr. Joel Pérez - How to Achieve Organizational Excellence through Cultural Humanity

I would like to share a book recommendation from Dr. Joel Pérez, a friend and colleague. His new book, Dear White Leader: How to Achieve Organizational Excellence through Cultural Humility, is a must-read for anyone interested in improving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in their organization.

In this book, Dr. Pérez provides a comprehensive guide to navigating the complexities of DEIB. He emphasizes the importance of cultural humility and offers practical steps for leaders to create a truly inclusive organization. Dear White Leader is an essential resource for those looking to become better leaders and create more inclusive workplaces.

Embracing Good Management for Better Mental Health

In today’s world, mental wellbeing has become a pressing concern. The 2023/2024 Human Development Report by the United Nations Development Programme says, “People’s mental wellbeing has been worsening. In the last 10 years, the number of people feeling stress, sadness, anxiety, anger, or worry has been rising, reaching its highest levels since the Gallup surveys began.” This means more people are feeling bad than ever before.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “Our world is becoming unhinged.” Even though it sounds scary, we are also living in one of the best times in history. Harvard professor Steven Pinker says, “Human progress is an observable fact.” So, it’s strange that while life gets better in many ways, people’s mental health gets worse.

Stress at work is a big part of this problem. Georgetown University professor Christine Porath says stress is making people act rudely at work more often. Since we spend a lot of our time at work, this is a huge problem.

As leaders in the funeral service and deathcare profession, we must understand how good management can improve mental health. By being supportive and caring, we can help our teams feel better.

In deathcare, we face unique challenges. Our work involves being present with grief and loss every day. This can take a toll on our mental health. Good management is crucial to help our teams cope with these challenges.

Celebrating Pride Month: Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate diversity and support LGBTQ+ communities. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are important all year long.

Employees today want more than just words; they want real change. They want to see their workplaces become fairer and more inclusive. Real change means more than just hiring a diverse workforce. It’s about making sure everyone feels included and valued every day.

Studies show that different groups experience work differently:

·      75% of Black employees in the U.S. who faced discrimination say it was because of their race.

·      Women report higher burnout rates than men, and this gap has grown since the pandemic.

·      Only 17% of LGBTQ+ employees strongly agree that their employer cares about their wellbeing, compared to 27% of non-LGBTQ+ employees.

Leaders must look at both numbers and personal experiences to truly understand DEI issues. We need to listen to our employees and make changes based on their feedback.
