Celebrating Pride Month: Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate diversity and support LGBTQ+ communities. But diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are important all year long.

Employees today want more than just words; they want real change. They want to see their workplaces become fairer and more inclusive. Real change means more than just hiring a diverse workforce. It’s about making sure everyone feels included and valued every day.

Studies show that different groups experience work differently:

  • 75% of Black employees in the U.S. who faced discrimination say it was because of their race.
  • Women report higher burnout rates than men, and this gap has grown since the pandemic.
  • Only 17% of LGBTQ+ employees strongly agree that their employer cares about their wellbeing, compared to 27% of non-LGBTQ+ employees.

Leaders must look at both numbers and personal experiences to truly understand DEI issues. We need to listen to our employees and make changes based on their feedback.

True DEI success requires ongoing effort and commitment from leaders. It’s not just about one-time training or reports; it’s about changing the culture. Leaders must integrate DEI into everyday decision-making and keep pushing forward, even when it’s hard.

A workplace that gets DEI right is healthier and more productive. When employees see people like themselves in leadership, they trust their leaders more. When they feel respected and included, they are more engaged and satisfied.

Let’s commit to making our workplaces better for everyone. By doing so, we can create a thriving, healthier organization for all.

I would like to share a book recommendation from Dr. Joel Pérez, a friend and colleague. His new book, Dear White Leader: How to Achieve Organizational Excellence through Cultural Humility, is a must-read for anyone interested in improving diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in their organization.

In this book, Dr. Pérez provides a comprehensive guide to navigating the complexities of DEIB. He emphasizes the importance of cultural humility and offers practical steps for leaders to create a truly inclusive organization. Dear White Leader is an essential resource for those looking to become better leaders and create more inclusive workplaces.
